Thailand's 1st Interscholastic Student Newspaper

Perplexed

Submission Rationale

I wanted to depict the clash of cultural identities surrounding this changing youth culture in urban Thailand is going
through. The half-faces are one of the same person, yet each reflects a separation the individual feels trying to merge
themselves again. The left half-face is a Chinese opera mask that shows the Asian way of raising children which involves
strict rules without letting children explore their own passion. The hook is the burden from authority, fear of culture
which embraces adult authority, and that creativity is labeled rebellious. The braids portray the hairstyle that most
Thai students have to wear during school. The tearing red string represents stress when teenagers feel unidentified by society.
The cracking forehead shows low self-esteem in the world. The child diverging from the womb portrays
adolescents' desperation to become more mature. The blue eye of the half-right face reflects the warp speed tunnel
of technology as the main ‘Influence’ of adolescents nowadays. The bottom has a variety of accessories that are
fashionable, including religious symbols of the Christian cross and Buddhist amulet. It entails a rise in secularism in
which religion has been losing ground around the world as more people, especially the younger generations,
have turned away from faith.
