Excessive amount of subject in Thai school schedule
In Thailand, the courses education in public schools usually set required credits for each class that students need to take, such as math, science, and Scouting and Girl/Boy Scouts.
Thai school students are required to have 7-8 classes within a day, or 35 classes per week. This schedule has mainly two unnecessary subjects from my perspective, so today I’d like to share my experience on these two classes and why I think It’s unnecessary.
Starting with Girl/Boy Scouts. Most Thai students have been exposed to this class since elementary school. It begins from junior to senior general Scouts in the third grade of high school. It’s required to wear uniforms and the small item must not be dropped or lost.
Based on my own experience in this class, I’d feel more comfortable to describe It as a bitter experience rather than a fun and enjoyable class. Main reason I don’t personally enjoy this class was first because of their teaching about ‘patience’. I remember that I needed to sit in the heat in order to ‘practice your patience’, but I’m not quite sure if this is really going to prepare us, the students, for the future.
The next thing I would like to say is being punished without a solid reason. Of course, It’s understandable when you or your friends really made mistakes. For example, when there are friends in the team who interrupt the teacher’s speech or when my team members are not here on time, but there was one time I don’t really get why I was punished. The story occurred when my table mates switched seats during military camp. This violates the trainer’s rules that say that students cannot switch tables/seats. What happened at the end was that the entire table, where I was sitting, had to sit down to eat under the dining table on the dusty floor. This was the worst experience I’ve ever seen. The only reason why this class can still be somehow fun is because there are friends who go through the same situation with you; try new things together, adventure, go to camp, and learn to tie a knot that we may use if we’re lost in the forest.
Although my personal experience may cause you guys to view this class in a negative way, but another thing I would like to say about this class is that there are also people who have not faced such a story. Some even have a good experience with this class, and It’s not right to blame the subject Itself. I’d say that it depends on your luck.
But to be honest, if I could choose, I probably would like to avoid having this course either.
Another subject that I would like to talk about is Home economics, but first of all, let me explain my situation first. I’m currently a Senior and enrolled in a science-mathematics lesson for the Thai curriculum. Therefore, it is very common to have fixed and rigorous classes. My normal routine for academic study includes Basic Mathematics 2 school lessons per week, Mathematics 4 lessons per week, and Physics, Chemistry, Biology 3 lessons per week. For some semesters, I need to take either astronomy or geology. Furthermore, there are also other basic subjects such as Thai language, English language, social, etc. Last thing I need to do is the assignments that must be submitted on time.
Home economics class from my experience are subdivided into subjects such as household chores, agriculture, business, and engineering. I’d like to mention again that this class’s curriculum is different in every Thai school, but from what I’ve been asking my friends so far, I often hear complaints about the amount of homework that is much more than the core subjects. Especially during online school, these subjects also provide an endless amount of additional work. Some assignments are not in the area that I’m good at, such as making a plan business as a group. It can be an interesting assignment, not gonna lie, but It’s too much for a senior who is going to take college entrance exams soon. College admissions nowadays are very competitive and It’s very hard to both keep up with work and study many subjects that can be related or unrelated to our major for the exam.
Even the coin has two sides, so everything must have its own good and bad sides. Of course, subjects in home economics helps students to learn and take real action, which is a really effective way of learning, but would it be better If students can choose classes they’re interested in and can be further improved in the future.
However, this article is just telling my own experience about these schedules and classes. Not every school is the same and I do not have any hidden agenda from this. I just want to ask a few questions: Is it possible if we can choose classes ourselves or not? For the schedule with 35 lessons per week, will there be subjects that we can change into blank spaces in our schedule?
วิชาที่มากเกินความจำเป็นของตารางเรียนโรงเรียนไทย
ตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน หลักสูตรสำหรับโรงเรียนรัฐบาลทั่วไปในประเทศไทย มักจะมีการกำหนดหน่วยกิตของวิชาที่นักเรียนมีความจำเป็นต้องเรียน เช่น วิชาคณิตศาตร์ วิทยาศาตร์ รวมถึงวิชาการงานอาชีพ และ ลูกเสือ-เนตรนารี
ในหนึ่งวัน นักเรียนในโรงเรียนไทยเรียนถึง 7-8 คาบต่อวัน หรือประมาณ 35 คาบต่อสัปดาห์ และในตารางเรียน ก็จะมีสองวิชาอย่างหลังนี้ สำหรับตัวผู้เขียนที่เป็นเพียงนักเรียนคนหนึ่ง เคยได้ผ่านประสบการณ์เรียนวิชาเหล่านั้นมา จึงอยากนำมาเล่าว่าทำไม ในความคิดเห็นของตัวผู้เขียนเอง ถึงมองว่ามันเป็นวิชาที่ ‘มากเกินความจำเป็น’
เริ่มที่วิชาลูกเสือ-เนตรนารี วิชานี้เป็นวิชาที่เด็กไทยส่วนใหญ่ได้ลองสัมผัสตั้งแต่ยังคงเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษา ตั้งแต่เป็นเพียงลูกเสือสำรอง จนถึงลูกเสือสามัญรุ่นใหญ่ในชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 ที่สวมชุดอย่างเต็มยศ โดยที่ส่วนหนึ่งของเครื่องแบบห้ามตกหล่นหรือหายไปเด็ดขาด
วิชานี้ในประสบการณ์ของตัวผู้เขียนเอง เป็นวิชาที่ค่อนข้างหวานอมขมกลืน จะกล่าวได้ว่ามันสนุกสนานก็ไม่ผิด แต่จะกล่าวว่ามันไม่มีความสุขก็ไม่ผิดเช่นกัน แต่เหตุผลที่ทำให้ตัวผู้เขียนรู้สึกไม่มีความสุข มันดูเหมือนจะมากกว่า อย่างแรกก็คือ วิชานี้ในการเรียนการสอนที่ผู้เขียนพบเจอคือต้องไปนั่งตากแดด เพื่อฝึกสิ่งที่เรียกว่า ‘ความอดทน’ แต่ผู้เขียนก็ไม่ทราบว่าการที่เราต้องใส่ชุดที่หนา และนั่งตากแดดมันจะช่วยฝึกสิ่งที่ว่าได้จริงหรือ
ข้อถัดมาที่อยากจะกล่าวคือ การโดนลงโทษอย่างไร้เหตุผล แน่นอนว่าตัวผู้เขียนเองเคยทำผิดพลาด และรับรู้ถึงความผิดของตนเอง และยอมรับการถูกลงโทษ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเพราะมีเพื่อนในทีมคุย หรือ เพื่อนในทีมเครื่องแบบไม่ครบก็ตาม แต่มีครั้งหนึ่ง เรื่องมันเกิดขึ้นเมื่อตัวผู้เขียนเองได้ไปเข้าค่ายลูกเสือที่ค่ายทหาร หนึ่งในเพื่อนร่วมโต๊ะทานข้าวได้สลับที่ไปนั่งที่อื่น ทำให้ผิดข้อตกลงของครูฝึกที่ว่าห้ามนั่งสลับโต๊ะ ผลที่เกิดขึ้นคือคนทั้งโต๊ะที่ตัวผู้เขียนนั่งอยู่ ต้องลงไปนั่งกินข้าวที่ใต้โต๊ะอาหารบนพื้นที่เต็มไปด้วยฝุ่นจากดิน และนั่นเป็นเรื่องที่แย่ที่สุดที่ผู้เขียนเคยพบเจอมา ส่วนเหตุผลที่วิชานี้มันยังมีส่วนเสี้ยวของความสนุกอยู่ได้ก็เพราะว่ามีเพื่อนที่ร่วมเผชิญเหตุการณ์เหมือนๆกัน ได้ลองทำสิ่งใหม่ๆ ได้ผจญภัย ได้ไปเข้าค่าย การได้เรียนการผูกเงื่อนเชือก ที่เราอาจจะได้ใช้หากหลงป่า
ถึงแม้ว่าประสบการณ์ของผู้เขียนอาจจะทำให้คุณผู้อ่านมองวิชานี้ในแง่ลบ แต่อีกเรื่องที่อยากกล่าวในย่อหน้าของวิชานี้ก็คือ มันก็มีคนที่ไม่ได้พบเจอเรื่องราวแบบนี้ และเขาได้เจอกับประสบการณ์ที่ดี จะกล่าวโทษตัววิชาก็ไม่ถูกเท่าไหร่ มันขึ้นอยู่กับดวงว่าเราจะได้เรียนแบบไหนมากกว่า
แต่ถ้าตัวผู้เขียนสามารถเลือกได้ ก็คงไม่อยากเรียนวิชานี้อยู่ดี
อีกวิชาหนึ่งที่ผู้เขียนอยากจะเล่าถึงคือวิชาการงานอาชีพ แต่ก่อนอื่น ขออธิบายก่อนว่าตอนนี้ ตัวผู้เขียนกำลังศึกษาชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 แผนการเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์-คณิตศาสตร์ จึงเป็นเรื่องปกติเป็นอย่างมากที่จะมีการเรียนการสอนที่ค่อนข้างเยอะ และหนัก เนื่องจากมีวิชาแยกเป็น คณิตศาสตร์พื้นฐาน 2 คาบต่อสัปดาห์ คณิตศาสตร์เพิ่มเติม 4 คาบต่อสัปดาห์ และ ฟิสิกส์ เคมี ชีวะ วิชาละ 3 คาบต่อสัปดาห์ และบางเทอมก็มีวิชาดาราศาสตร์ หรือ ธรณีวิทยา ซึ่งก็ยังมีวิชาพื้นฐานอื่นๆอีก เช่น วิชาภาษาไทย ภาษาอังกฤษ สังคม และด้วยความเยอะที่ว่านั้น สิ่งที่ตามมาก็คือ ภาระงานที่ต้องทำส่งตามหน้าที่ของนักเรียน
วิชาการงานอาชีพและเทคโนโลยี ในประสบการณ์ที่ผู้เขียนเคยผ่านมาวิชานี้ มีวิชาที่สามารถเรียกแยกย่อย ได้เป็น วิชางานบ้าน วิชาเกษตร วิชาธุรกิจ และ วิชางานช่าง ผู้เขียนขอย้ำอีกครั้งว่าวิชานี้แต่ละโรงเรียนมีการจัดการที่แตกต่างกันไป แต่จากสิ่งที่ผู้เขียนได้สอบถามเพื่อนๆรอบตัว ก็มักจะบ่นในทำนองเดียวกันว่าวิชาเหล่านี้ให้การบ้านเยอะกว่าวิชาหลักๆเสียอีก ซึ่งเท่าที่ผู้เขียนได้เรียนมา ก็สามารถตอบได้ว่า จริง และยิ่งในสถานการณ์ที่ต้องเรียนออนไลน์ วิชาเหล่านี้ก็มอบงานเพิ่มเติมที่ทำเท่าไหร่ก็ไม่มีวันหมด และบางวิชาก็เป็นวิชาที่ตัวผู้เขียนไม่ได้มีความถนัดที่จะทำ เช่น งานที่ต้องทำร่วมกันเป็นกลุ่มเพื่อวางแผนธุรกิจขึ้นมา มันอาจจะเป็นงานที่น่าสนใจ แต่สำหรับนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 ที่มีเป้าหมายที่ต้องสอบเข้ามหาลัยรัฐบาลเสียส่วนใหญ่ มีอัตราการแข่งขันที่สูง เพื่อเข้าศึกษาต่อในคณะที่เราอยากเรียน ต้องเตรียมตัวอ่านหนังสือสอบ และบางวิชาที่ใช้สอบ ก็ไม่มีในหลักสูตรของโรงเรียนด้วยซ้ำ
ขนาดเหรียญยังมีสองด้าน ทุกอย่างมีด้านดีและด้านเสียกันทั้งหมด แน่นอนว่าวิชาต่างๆในหมวดวิชาการงานอาชีพนี้มันเป็นวิชาที่เราได้ลองปฏิบัติจริง ลงมือทำจริงๆ ซึ่งก็เป็นการเรียนรู้ที่ค่อนข้างมีประสิทธิภาพ แต่จะดีกว่านี้ไหมถ้าตัวผู้เรียนสามารถเลือกได้ ในการเรียนในตัววิชาที่สนใจและสามารถนำไปต่อยอดกับแนวทางชีวิตต่อไป
