I always wanted to be an artsy person, who could express myself with a simple pen and paper, but even I couldn’t appreciate my own drawings, so I turned to music. Yet, it wasn’t until I discovered Jazz that really allowed me to express myself in the ways I couldn’t before. The complex chords and abstract beats truly compelled me to this art form, which allows me to progress as a musician and as a person. I clicked very well with Jazz because it was so abstract that you could play the wrong notes and still make it sound intentional. Coming out of my bubble of safety opened my eyes to see that Jazz has no ownership; you don’t have to be from New Orleans to like Jazz. In the same vein, one can appreciate the variety of cultures around the globe and still see similarities between music, food, and other factors that are represented in these cultures. My perspective changed in the sense that I used to see how different people were, but in fact, we are more similar than we think- and this connects us as humans.
